Salford Harriers win Silver at Northern XC
by Tom Rodgers Salford's men's team were out in force at the latest Northern Cross Country Championships staged at Witton Park, Blackburn. The Harriers were looking to make an impact on the event and managed to get a good number of runners out. In the early stages of the race Salford's Andi Jones, 31, and Stockport's Steve Vernon, 28, led, but as the race progressed Vernon pushed on and gradually opened up a commanding gap over Jones, pushing Bolton's Tom Lanchashire into third place. Vernon rattled home in the latter stages to win the Northern Cross Country title for a third time, and becoming only the third man to retain the title in the history of the event. Andi Jones was a clear second and Tom Lancashire finished third. Finishing strongly in fourth place was Leigh's Pete Riely closely follwed by Ben Fish for the Blackburn men's team. The next Salford Harrier over the line 10th place Carl Hardman, the 26-year old having had an amazing run. Backing the team up and third Harrier to finish was John Brown, 47th - continuing a great run of form after pulling off first place in the Veterans over-40s at the Helsby Half Marathon. Ben Riddell in his first Northern Cross finished in 50th place, with James Kovacs 57th and the youngest member of the Harriers at just 21, Joe Bailey, crossed the line in 63rd. The team prize was won in great style by Leeds City, with Salford 2nd and Altrincham 3rd. The next big test for the Harriers is the National Cross Country Championships, to take place on Saturday 27th February at Roundhey Park, Leeds.
