John Merry on Salford's Community Stadium, Barton
by Tom Rodgers In this interview with John Merry, Leader of Salford City Council, we discuss the rugby league stadium which is due to be built at Barton. Councillor Merry prefers the term "community stadium", despite the fact that community groups will have to pay to use the stadium. Here, the head descision-maker at the Council answers questions on the strategy of the community stadium, due to be funded by a £20m debt and built at Barton. Peel, who are in a joint partnership with Salford Council to deliver the stadium, put out a call for tenders to build the 15,000 seater ground last week. Since Salford Council received initial planning application in 2006 the project has been beset with challenges and has come under some close scrutiny due to fears over congestion in the Barton area.
