Open Age - Cadishead Rhinos 24 Eccles and Salford 16
Cadishead were involved in another local derby cracker against Eccles on Saturday.

It was the visitors that started the brighter of the two sides putting the Rhinos under considerable pressure and although they did not allow their line to be breached they did concede two early penalties to give Eccles a 4-0 lead.

Once they settled down however the Cadishead pack started to take control with man of the match Karl Leighton and Dave Keane leading the way and it was Keane who burst through the Eccles defence following good work from Martin Burgess and Steve Hill. Hill’s conversion gave the Rhinos a narrow 6-4 lead.

With the Rhinos dominating play the Eccles defence held out to half time with some solid tackling.

Eccles again started the second half brightly, however the introduction of player/coach Jason Reed from the bench on 49 minutes soon paid dividends when he collected a Darren Hill pass to race over for a try under the posts converted by Steve Hill to extend the Rhinos lead to 12-4.

A superb Tom O’Shea try minutes later saw the winger finish off a sweeping move in the corner and Steve Hill’s touchline conversion stretched the Rhinos lead to 18-4.

With the Rhinos seemingly coasting the balance changed when Karl Leighton was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle on 64 minutes and Eccles took full advantage scoring two converted tries in ten minutes to peg the score back to 18-16.

In a tense last 6 minutes the Rhinos kept their composure and extended their lead to 20-16 with a Steve Hill conversion before blockbusting forward Dave Keane broke through and stormed over from 10 metres out to seal the game.

Steve Connor, Darren Evans and Mark Woodfine all had good games with teenagers Jon Gaskell and George Mcnulty-Shaw continuing to impress.

Under 16s – Leyland Warriors 40 Cadishead Rhinos 10

The Rhinos final league game of the season saw them travel to high flying Leyland with an understrength side, however in the true spirit of the game Leyland lent Cadishead players to ensure the fixture went ahead.

It was Leyland who started well and soon had a 12-0 lead with two quick converted tries.

However Cadishead responded well and good work from Dean Corcoran, Declan Hurst and James Prior saw on loan prop Danny Boyd crash over for a try converted by James Nugent reducing the Leyland lead to 12-6.

The Rhinos dominated the remainder of the half with strong running full back Mitchell Clarke and man of the match James Crozier both causing the Warriors defence problems, however Leyland extended their lead just before half time with a breakaway try to give them a 18-6 interval lead.

Leyland stepped up a gear after half time and some fast flowing rugby resulted in two fine tries to increase their lead to 28-6.

Cadishead refused to lie down though and strong running by Jake Blore and Ryan White laid the platform for the impressive Danny Boyd to score his second try of the day to bring the scores to 28-10

Two further tries saw the Leyland side clinch the victory at 40-10 in a very entertaining game.

Under 11s – Cadishead Rhinos 10 Westhoughton Lions 36

A very entertaining game saw Westhoughton play some fantastic first half rugby to give them a 24-0 lead.

However it was the young Rhinos who bossed the second half. Harrison Tyrrell scored a superb length of the pitch try converted by Lewis Busutill who shortly afterwards scored the Rhinos second try when on the 5th tackle he dummied the Lions defence and dived over for a clever try.

Rampaging forward David Williams had a tremendous game supported well by Ben Smith, Liam Ashurst and Matthew Sloan.
