Clifton Cricket Club weekend result
Ask any Clifton Cricket Club member to predict a final total from a mid-innings score of 70-7 for any first XI side in the last decade or more and the answers would average out at about 80, but this year, Glenn Bullock holds the reins of a side which has more “true grit” than we’ve seen for many a year. On a very difficult wicket, Littleborough decided they had enough on the board when they passed 90, so were confident that their 120-9 was a winning score. So it proved as early wickets tumbled, but when the skipper came to the wicket, he showed that the devils in the pitch could be tamed with a belligerent 19 setting the scene for Ian Morris (34) to take the score into three figures and for Liam Dorsey and Andy Hough, still basking in yet another five wicket haul, to edge beyond the home score and produce a tantrum akin to a Hollywood super-model from the disappointed Littleborough pro. Earlier, professional Hendro Puchert took the other four wickets to fall as he bowled a sapping 25 over spell. If that wasn’t enough, after a weekend in which the opener Chris Lord described as having used up “five years’ worth of good luck”, they went and did it all over again on Sunday when Andy Hough, Greg Jennings and Adam Rodzoch were this time the True Grit heroes in yet another one wicket win; this time putting together a last wicket stand of 44 to win in highly improbable circumstances. With the score standing at 148-8 with 8 overs remaining, even John Wayne would have given up the ghost, but Jennings and Rodzoch added a quick 25 in 3 overs and Hough stepped into the breach again to surpass Saturday’s exploits by once again adding to a five wicket haul with 18 not out as Rodzoch moved on to 46 not out and the points were in the bag with four balls to spare. Clifton second team got in on the act as well and actually surpassed the firsts’ points tally by ten to eight. They managed to bowl out both sets of opposition for less than a hundred with Ollie Dunn taking 5-10 and 3-21, Stephen Thorpe taking 5-21 and 2-8 (off ten overs) and Ian Davidson and Danny Hill weighing in with five wickets as well as Littleborough were all out for 78 and Middleton for 83 giving victories of eight wickets and 79 runs. Matthew Tye (28no) and Chris Thorpe (33) were the chief run makers against Littleborough and Ian Morris returning to his beloved 2nd XI scored 41 and Stephen Thorpe 30 against Middleton. Clifton thirds were the party poopers of the weekend providing a spaghetti western of a performance against Greenmount. After restricting the home side to 140 (Steve Eccles 6-35) on a decent wicket, some poor shots led to a rather disappointing 22 run defeat. Source: Clifton Cricket Club.
