Monton Amateurs 5 Fives Athletic 1
Monton Amateurs opening fixture of the new season saw us facing local rivals Fives Athletic and this was a typical sunny, warm day matched by a hot performance from the hosts. From the first whistle the Ammies settled into a well paced game with good passing and intelligent off the ball movement. Striker Scott Weir opened the scoring with a cheeky lob over the keeper after twenty minutes closely followed by Mark Bradshaw with a well taken shot on the turn and with Monton firmly in control Danny Halsall delivered an unstoppable shot just before half time to virtually kill off any hopes of an upset by Fives. The second half was much the same apart from the visitors pulling a goal back after some hesitant defending following a long throw in but Monton once more increased their lead through Scott Weirs tap in after some good work by his strike partner Bradshaw and it was left to Jack Taylors spot kick to wrap the proceedings up and get the Ammies off to the start we wanted.
