Reds blitz Halifax to put things right
With it generally being accepted that the Reds did themselves no justice at last weeks loss to Leigh Centurions, it fell to former Reds' head Coach Karl Harrison's Halifax side to taste the reaction to that defeat, as the Reds scored 40 unanswered points, including some scintillating rugby in this blitz of their West Yorkshire rivals. Having scored the first try of the game, the Reds found themselves 6-16 down after 25 minutes and the possibility of another humiliating defeat began to loom large. Then, a pair of superb performances from Feka Palea'aesina and Vinnie Anderson shook Salford to life and they finished the second half in fine style, tying the scores at 16-16, but narrowly missing out on taking a lead into the break with the last play of the first half. With early scores flying in for the Reds and Matty Smith and Ashley Gibson finding their feet and running riot - alongside a highly impressive debut from Joel Moon - punctuated by a brief departure with a broken nose pumping blood - the Reds were easy on the eye and took out their revenge on a tiring Halifax side who clearly had no answers for the obvious extra class. Head Coach Phil Veivers after the game wasn't happy with his side's slow start but generally was full of praise for his men, reserving special comment for Palea'aesina. "Feka has his hunger for the game back. He's shed a load of weight and from reporting in at 130kg last year he's come back at 113 this time which means he's a lot more agile and much fitter too. I thought he was outstanding." It wasn't all roses for the Reds though as they collected a couple of injuries besides Moon's damaged face. Captain Steve Wild has picked up a back problem but more worrying is Matty Ashurst's ankle which will be looked at by medical staff tomorrow with the possibility of a ligament tear.
