Salford City Reds 46 Halifax 16
By Nigel Roberts
After last week’s disappointing home defeat by Leigh Centurions the Reds fans were hoping they would bounce back against Halifax. The Reds were without Jodie Broughton (hernia strain) but new signing Joel Moon was brought in for his debut whilst new captain Steve Wild led the side for the first time. The visitors took a 0-4 lead in the 10th minute when former Reds centre Steve Tyrer bounced off a few tackles to score. Not long after the Reds took the lead when Luke Patten scythed through to score with Daniel Holdsworth adding the conversion (6-4). Things then began to look a little ominous for the Reds when Halifax added two further tries in quick succession through Tyrer and Rob Worrincy to grab a 6-16 lead after twenty-five minutes. With half-time approaching the Reds drew level with tries from Holdsworth and Ashley Gibson. Both goaled by Holdsworth (16-16). After the break the Reds began to assert themselves and added thirty points without reply. Tries came from Vinny Anderson, Matty Smith (2) and Gareth Owen, the pick of which was Smith’s second effort when he finished off a sparkling move down the left wing. Holdsworth added three further conversions and Smith two, for a final score of 46-16. After the match coach Phil Veivers said: "It was an improvement on last week. We controlled an hour of the game though I was not happy with how we started". He praised Matty Smith who he said had had more of a role to play. He also gave credit to substitute Iaefeta Palea’aesina who enjoyed a prolonged spell in the game. Veivers added that Palea’aesina had put in a lot of work in the off-season and had shed 16kgs and was now more agile. Salford: Patten, Gibson, Gleeson, Moon, Williams, Holdsworth, Smith, James, Godwin, Boyle, Ashurst, Anderson, Wild. Subs: Palea’aesina, Sidlow, Adamson, Neal, McPherson, Sneyd, Nero, Owen.
