Old Alts 2 AFC Monton 2
by Trevor Dutt
Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division Saturday 21st January 2012 AFC Monton faced a difficult away fixture against high flying Old Alts and came away with a creditable share of the points thanks to a fine squad performance and a brace of goals from Mark Baguley. Despite falling behind to two somewhat sloppy goals - mainly down to the gusty adverse weather conditions - Monton continued to play some fine pass-and-move football on a sticky pitch. They also created the best move of the first half as Mark Bradshaw delivered a sublime cross to Rob Whatmough who was desperately unlucky to see his volley clear the Old Alts crossbar by inches. With the wind behind them for the second half Monton got about their business with vigour right from start and ten minutes in equalised as Mark Baguley converted a free kick from the corner of the home side's penalty area with a vicious low drive around the wall and into the bottom corner of the net. Monton were now in total control of the game and midway through the half Baguley once again delivered a killer blow to Old Alts as he powerfully found the back of the net again from twenty five yards out after latching on to a perfect pass to level the scores. Rob Whatmough was very unlucky to see his cool finish over ruled for offside in the final minutes but overall a draw was a fair result for both sides. Monton keeper Joe Perry, defenders Jack Fitzgerald, Rick Hodkin, Jack Bolton and skipper George Switzer, midfielders Mike Gill, Mark Platt and Jack Taylor, forwards Mark Bradshaw, Mark Baguley and Rob Whatmough, subs Phil Redford, David Coffey, Chris Wilde and Joe Doris all deserve credit for their recent efforts and commitment to the cause.
