Salford versus Castleford match preview

This weekend sees the start of the new Super League season with Salford City Reds playing host to Yorkshire rivals Castleford Tigers at the new Salford City Stadium at Barton (kick-off at 6.00pm).

Last season Castleford finished ninth under Terry Matterson but this term they will be led by former Leigh,St.Helens and Wigan coach Ian Millward.

Reds' coach Phil Veivers has named his first competitive squad of the season and includes six newcomers in Joel Moon,Jordan James,Matty Ashurst,Shannon McPherson,Stuart Howarth and Ben Gledhill in a full-strength line-up for the opening clash.

Stephen Wild takes over as captain with Luke Patten as vice-captain. Wild is excited about the season opener and looking forward to leading out the Reds on a historic night: "We want to get people excited about the club again and want to get people down here. If we put in a good performance against Cas and hopefully get a win against them on Sky it’s only going to help us," he said. "It’s a great honour to captain the side, especially coming into the new stadium. Hopefully it will be the start of something big."

Castleford coach Ian Millward also named his squad with new recruits Josh Griffin,Lee Mitchell and former Reds forward Steve Nash in line for their debuts. Cas have ten players in their squad who have come through the club’s academy.

Reds squad : Patten, Broughton, Gleeson, Moon, Williams, Holdsworth, Smith, Jewitt, Godwin, James, Ashurst, McPherson, Wild (c), Nero, Adamson, Anderson, Howarth, Palea'aesina, Gledhill.

Castleford squad : Owen,Arundel,Dixon,Griffin,Chase,Orr (c),Emmitt,Clark,Ferres,Walker,Jones,Milner,Hudson,Mitchell,Holmes,Massey,McGoldrick,Nash,Davies.
