SalfordOnline totem pole campaign: John Wilkinson - (Part 6)
By Caroline Kullendorff

John Wilkinson OBE, affectionately known as 'Mr Salford', is involved in some of the area's biggest engineering projects such as the construction of Salford City Reds' new stadium.

He is also starting up a new welding training school at his Worsley-based engineering firm Wilkinson Star which was formed in 1971. 'Mr Salford' reminisced on his memories of the famous Salford totem pole and offered his opinions on where and how it should be resited.

The 64-year old businessman, and also the longest serving chairman in rugby league, threw his weight behind SalfordOnline's campaign to have the totem pole restored and put back on display.

John Wilkinson is a credit to Salford, The Museum in Peel Park was falling down and the animals had gone, The Willows is the same nobody goes there to watch football anymore, the game is dead and he is doing his best by moving it out of the area where it belongs. The Totem Pole is entirely diffrent and should be put up in Salford Precinct where it can be seen by everybody, not the Lowry, the chap could not even proper!.
