by Tom Rodgers
Councillor George Wilson, ex-docker and now Mayor for Salford has lent his weight to our campaign to find a permanent home for the Salford Totem Pole. Councillor Wilson was one of the crew who unloaded the Totem Pole onto Salford Docks in the 1960s and believes this cultural artefact should be housed on the Docks - now the Quays - where it was originally erected.
Built on the site between 8 and 9 Dock, The Lowry would seem a natural home for the Totem Pole.
Julia Fawcett, Chief Executive of The Lowry, preferred not to be interviewed on camera, but a Lowry spokesperson* later issued the following statement to SalfordOnline:
"The Lowry galleries are home to Salford's world-class collection of paintings and drawings by LS Lowry.
"We are not a musuem and hold no other objects in our permanent collection, for this reason we simply do not have the necessary expertise or resources to provide a permanent home for the Totem Pole.
"Given the historic significance of the Totem Pole, we are very pleased to hear that it has been offered residency at Manchester Museum, whose objective it is to collect, maintain and display a broad range of heritage objects."
With this statement in mind, where do you think the Totem Pole should live?
* SalfordOnline has been asked to point out that the statement quoted above which was originally attributed to the Chief Executive should instead have been credited to a Lowry spokesperson.
We apologise for the sound quality in this interview. Some rather enthusiastic young people from the Walkden and Little Hulton branch of Salford Foundation were performing a song in the background

The Salford Totem Pole is a work of art as are the many Lowry paintings in The Lowry so why does it not belong there? On what basis do you, William, state, with such apparent authority, that it belongs in a museum? What kind of expertise is required to look afte this piece? |

I bet "Jim and William" feel right fools now! What are they playing at and what is their agenda? |

Jim and William - posting as two separate identities from the same IP address minutes after one another is frowned upon. |

Hang on a minute - what do you mean WE fund Lowry? That's not true at all. The place operates on small percentage of subsidy compared to most organisations, and earns about 85% of revenue itself, according to their website so that's just spreading incorrect information. What's your agenda? |
Comment by William 15th April 2011
This is pathetic! As far as I know, the Lowry has theatres and galleries. It is not a museum and isn't funded to be one. Certainly I doubt it has the kind of staff expertise which can look after and maintain an object like this. If people want it to be housed there, who will pay? The council? But they are cutting budgets aren't they? Places like the Lowry bring so much to the city and the economy, (in fact scrap that, there ISN'T anywhere like the place), but it is not a museum, and a museum needs to look after this object, simple as that. |

What an absolute (*expletive deleted*) that Julia Fawcett is, we pay her wages, fund the Lowry etc.. what knowledge of Salford has she got?. If I may be so bold Ms/Mrs Fawcett where about in this country are you from, as you seem to have no knowledge of Salford and its history. You may have just stirred up a hornets nest with your crass comments. Well said Mayor Wilson, stand your ground, we pay her wages, let her listen to us. Gloves off.. |

George Wilson sounds like a really good Salford man. George, I hope you can sort out the Fawcett woman's totally out of order attitude! |

The Pole is so well liked by local business and community, clearly there is never going to be a charge, the problem from what I am reading is about The Lowry and a certain Director who personally does not like the Pole, and will therefore not be told!
Who's in charge in this City? |

I would be interested to know what expertise is required to place our totem pole inside the Lowry that doesn't already exist within the Salford community. As far as I am aware, many of the resources needed to bring the pole to its present state of excellent health have been provided by good will. Perhaps if Julia Fawcett produced a costing this could be compared to other projects within the city and give the pole a chance to compete for limited funds. |

Julia Fawcett sounds like she is stuck too far up her own totem to me |

Nice one Mayor, Julia Fawcett's wages and the Lowry is paid for and set up by and for the People of Salford, the people are clearly saying they want it in the Lowry!
Why has Julia not been interviewed? |
