Bogus taxi driver arrested on suspicion of rape and theft by Swinton CID

A man has been arrested following an investigation into a bogus taxi driver who attacked women.

The 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and theft and remains in police custody.

Officers from divisions across GMP have been investigating offences in December 2009 and January 2010, where a man driving a bogus taxi threatened women and forced them to perform sexual acts.

Detective Sergeant Julie Connor, of Swinton CID, said: "These incidents are very worrying but, thankfully very rare.

"We have been working closely with colleagues across the force and I would urge anyone who may have been subjected to a similar attack to call police.

"I must stress the importance of only using licensed and preordered taxis and where possible I would urge women not to travel alone."

Victims or witnesses to incidents are asked to call police on 0161 856 5351, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
