Elderly woman assaulted in Little Hulton

A partially blind, elderly woman has been assaulted and burgled in Little Hulton.

Around 2pm on Thursday 18 February 2010, the offender knocked on the door of a bungalow on Streetgate, Little Hulton, claiming he was emptying the bins.

The man asked the elderly homeowner if he could use the toilet. Once in the bathroom he turned the tap on and pretended it was faulty. He then pretended he was looking for a stop-tap, but was challenged by the woman and her friend. He left empty handed.

The offender then tried exactly the same tactic to gain access to a bungalow next door. The 80-year-old woman said the man could go around the back to empty the bins.

Once around the back, the man went in the house, grabbed hold of the woman pushed her into the bathroom and used a table and chair to lock her in. Because the woman lives in sheltered accommodation, she was able to use the emergency cord to alert the warden. The man ransacked the bungalow and fled the scene with a watch.

The woman was taken to hospital where she received treatment for minor injuries and shock.

Detective Sergeant John Andrew said: “We are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the man or have any information as to who he is. While the lady only had minor injuries, she was very shaken and traumatised by the attack which occurred in her own home.

“We have a dedicated team working to bring this offender to justice.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact 0161 872 5050 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
