Top of Greater Manchester Police's Most Wanted list is 29-year old Richard Smith, who escaped from police custody on Thursday 13 May.

Smith, of Pegwell Drive, Lower Broughton, was being taken to court by security van after being charged with conspiracy to commit arson.

Two men attacked the van to spring Smith from police custody and escaped down the nearby Cleminson Street.

At about 7.15am, Smith was taken from Swinton Police Station in a security van to Salford Magistrates' Court for his first appearance.

The van arrived at the back of the court on Cleminson Street at about 7.45am and was attacked by two men, who had been in a white Transit van parked nearby.

Smith and the two men drove off in the Transit, which was found abandoned on North Hill Street within a few minutes.

Smith is described as a white man, aged 29, 5ft 10in tall, of heavy build with green eyes and brown hair. He was wearing blue jeans, a black sweatshirt and Adidas trainers when he was last seen. His teeth are bleached. He also has a tattoo on one of his fingers.

Detective Inspector Clare Devlin, based at Salford CID, said: "Smith is just creating more problems for himself by running off because he will be caught and this is another, more serious, charge to add to those he was already facing.

"If you see him or know where he is, please do not approach him but call us immediately by dialling 999."

Anyone with information is asked to call Salford CID on 0161 856 5351 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
