Fake fag fine for Eccles shop
An owner of an off-licence who put the public at risk by selling potentially dangerous cigarettes has been prosecuted.

Jan Posladek, 32, pleaded guilty to 14 offences at Salford Magistrates Court in an investigation brought by Salford's Trading Standards.

The court heard how he was in possession, with intent to sell, hundreds of non duty paid cigarettes and tobacco without the correct health warnings on the packets.

The goods were found and seized by Trading Standards officers during several visits to Posladek's 'Macky's' shop on Liverpool Road in Eccles.

Among the goods seized were packets of counterfeit cigarettes branded 'Superking' and 'Regal King' which officials tested and confirmed to be fake. Officers also found non duty paid wine and spirits.

And in May, the council revoked the stores licence - banning it from selling alcohol.

Posladek of 74 Barton Lock in Eccles was charged for selling cigarettes and tobacco without the legal health and safety warnings and for selling fake cigarettes.

He was sentenced to an 18 month community punishment order and ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid community work and pay £2,000 towards court costs.

Cllr Ray Mashiter, Salford City Council's lead member for environment, including Trading Standards, said: "These items are not produced for the UK market and therefore will not be regulated in the same way.

"They are illegal and a health and safety risk to the public and we've taken action on behalf of people who complained to us about goods being sold at the shop.

"We also know that counterfeiting can be linked to other serious and organised crime and we're working better with the police and other agencies to help catch offenders involved in these crimes."
