Kersal takeaway closed after cockroach complaint
A Kersal takeaway shop has been forced to close until further notice after cockroaches were discovered. The infestation at Peter Pan Pizza of 19 King Edward Buildings on Bury Old Road in Kersal, was reported by a customer, Salford Magistrates Court heard. Salford City Council’s Environmental Health officers found that the takeaway had become a breeding ground for the German variety of bugs after the owner failed to keep the premises clean. Mr Zabi Karemi, 23, from Halworth Road in Crumpsall, had obtained a quote from a pest control company to get rid of the disease carrying insects but he had failed to act on it and his business was continuing to make and sell food. Officers saw cockroaches running throughout the shop on floors, work surfaces and food preparation areas. Cockroaches were also found in sweetcorn and flour used to make pizza bases. Inspectors also found dirt on walls, floors and shelving. Uncovered food in the cold display counter was open to risk of contamination and there were mice droppings on shelving and work surfaces and gnawed burger boxes. Workers were also using washing up liquid to clean work surfaces rather than a disinfectant to kill bacteria. The council are continuing to investigate the matter. Councillor Ray Mashiter, lead member for environment said: “The condition of this takeaway was absolutely shocking. We have a duty to protect the public and when we find such a serious health risk we must step in. We hope this action sends a clear message to other food premises to comply with Food Hygiene requirements.” Photo source: Wikipedia
