Could you give someone a lifeline by donating an old mobile phone
Salford City Council has launched a mobile phone campaign that could provide a lifeline to victims of domestic abuse.

We are asking members of the public and council staff to donate their old mobile phones so that survivors of domestic abuse in Salford can make emergency calls to help them keep safe.

Incidents of domestic abuse increase over Christmas and the New Year and many victims have their phones removed or damaged by their abuser or retained by police to use as evidence.

This means many victims are often left vulnerable and unable to contact family, friends or the emergency services.

Unwanted phones and chargers can be handed in at the Gateway Centres at Pendleton, Walkden and Eccles, the Broughton Hub and every youth centres throughout Salford.

They will be recycled by Salford Independent Domestic Abuse Advisory Service and Greater Manchester Police’s public protection unit.

Salford City Council deputy Leader Councillor David Lancaster said:

“Victims are often financially abused or on low incomes so they are unable to replace phones that have been damaged or taken.

“Many people get a new mobile phone for Christmas or have old ones that they do not use any more.

“By donating your old and unwanted mobile phones you could literally provide a lifeline to a victims of domestic abuse in Salford.
