Salford sets out strategy for the future
Salford City Council has set out its strategy to prepare the city for the future and achieve a greener vision. The Core Strategy protects the city’s existing greenbelt, covering more than a third of Salford, and adds an extra 40 hectares in Little Hulton. As well as protecting green space, the plan also seeks to increase housing in Salford to support the city’s growing population. New homes will be built on Brownfield land, with 90% being redevelopment of previously developed sites. Two new recreation areas have been proposed for the city – a new country park at Little Hulton adjoining Cutacre and a natural greenspace on the site of the former Swinton Sewage Treatment Works. And a new policy to prevent further peat extraction at Chat Moss will help to restore this internationally-important bogland. There will also be significant housing development in the centre of the region to cut commuter journeys to Manchester and further improve the city’s green credentials. But the housing challenge will also need to take into consideration Salford’s aging population, with specific housing for the over 65s being made available Planning lead member Councillor Derek Antrobus said: “The city faces three major challenges over the next 15 years: it needs to get greener, it is getting bigger and it is getting older. “This document says how we will address those challenges in a realistic but ambitious way to make this the greenest ever vision put forward for our city. It will bring together policies that cope with a growing city in the most sustainable way.” The Core Strategy will now go before an inspector who will hear objections to the plan.
